Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu. King Dasharatha of Ayodhya performed the Putrakameshti Yagna for a son. From the sacrificial fire emerged a divine figure who gave Dasharatha a bowl of kheer (pudding) to distribute among his queens. In time, Queen Kaushalya gave birth to Rama, Kaikeyi to Bharata, and Sumitra to the twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Rama was born at noon on the ninth day of Chaitra month, under the Pushya Nakshatra. The city of Ayodhya celebrated with great joy, and this day is commemorated annually as Ram Navami.
